Finding The Right Bow
Choosing a bow for you violin or celo or another string instrument is like buying a car. Your bow/car must not only look stunning, but feel great, perform, and even more important it must withstand the test of time. Afterall these things aren't cheap.
However if you are looking for cheap, that doesnt necessarily mean you'll leave the store with a low quality tool. But like everything that is cheap (inexpensive), know that you get what you see so don't expect it to last very long.
The band on the bow is made of hair, hosetail, but on an inexpensive violin bow the hair is synthetic or nylon. Higher quality bows are made, typically with either white or black/brown horse hair, each give a unique sound. White hair is known to make a smoother sound, while black/brown hair is course and makes a rougher sound (used for double basses mostly).
Carbon fiber bows are making a stronger appearence for their durabitly. But a Pernambuco bow is reputibly the best. A great Pernambuco bow will run any strings musician at the least $500. Ouch, a carbon fiber bow may run a couple hundred less than a Pernambuco Brasil wood bow.
That was a little tid-bit of bow knowledge. Now here is my list of the 5 best Pernambuco bow makers.
